Is telling a paleontologist that life didn't evolve like telling a mechanic that cars are powered by chipmunks?

No analogy is perfect - chipmunks actually exist. More like "cars are powered by gnurfs, but they're invisible, immaterial and leave no evidence of their existence except exhaust gasses. We know they exist, because 100 years after the last one died, someone wrote a book about them.
