Why does a paper towel absorb water?

Liquids like water have an ability known as capillary action, capillary action allows a liquid to flow against gravity where liquid spontaneously rises in a narrow space such as a thin tube, or in porous materials such as paper. Adhesion between water molecules cellulose in paper pulls the liquid column up, and surface tension draws the remainder of the liquid with the rising liquid level
